TCUP is based in the Union Park area of Des Moines, IA. We're a 5 minute drive from Downtown and in a culturally and socio-economically diverse area. We have a few young families and many retired people in our congregation. Our people live in a multitude of areas around the Greater Des Moines Area, but call this area our ministry grounds. We have a rich tradition (141 years and counting), but are seeking new ways of pursuing ministry with a focus on being a neighborhood church. We are small in number, but mighty in the belief that God has us here for a reason.
Iowa enjoys all four seasons, each with their own quirks. We experience any and every weather from a foot of snow to 105-degrees (without humidity). In Des Moines, we have city-life with a smaller town feel. We have many trails and paths for walking, hiking, and bike riding.
We are at the intersection of Interstate-80 and Interstate-35, serve as the county and state seat and have many local sports teams to cheer on throughout the year. We also have one of the largest and best state fairs in the nation hosted in our city every August and a fantastic Farmer's Market from May to October. Des Moines is big enough for great concerts and small enough that you can cross town in 20 minutes. We have just enough of everything and not too much of anything.
Housing and employment
Des Moines has been named as one of the best cities for small businesses, to raise a family, and for young professionals. Des Moines is known for being a hub for a variety of industries, including insurance, mortgage and banking, and agriculture.
Des Moines has a 26% LOWER cost of living than the national average and TCUP owns a 3-bedroom house that can serve as pastoral housing. The Union Park area is a 20-30 minute drive to the outermost suburbs in the Greater Des Moines Area, 5 minutes from the State Capital and Downtown Des Moines, and 5 minutes to two different hospitals.
Schools and Education
Des Moines has both public and private schools available. TCUP is located near two public high schools: North High and East High along with two elementary schools: Cattell and Findley. We have a good relationship with the North High Administration and have worked with Cattell in various events in the past. Children's and teen's sports options for school and club teams are also available around the city.
TCUP resides in the same neighborhood as Grand View University and is 15 minutes from Drake University. Des Moines is also home to a medical school, Des Moines University. Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) provides both initial and continuing college education opportunities.
Healthcare and Lifestyle
Des Moines hosts triathlons, musicals, concerts, and sporting events at the various venue locations in and around Downtown, https://www.catchdesmoines.com/. There are plenty of neighborhood shopping centers as well as larger shopping malls in locations around the Greater Des Moines Area. There is a community playhouse that presents 10+ shows a year for adults and children with local talent and our Civic Center hosts a variety of musicals, theater, ballet, and our Des Moines Symphony throughout the year. Des Moines is only a 2-hour drive to Omaha, a 4-hour drive to the Twin Cities and a 5-hour drive to Chicago for any bigger venues that we don't get.
Des Moines has three healthcare hospital groups: MercyOne, UnityPoint, and Broadlawns, which comprises 5 hospitals and numerous clinics and urgent care centers around the Greater Des Moines Area. We also have a VA Hospital in the Beaverdale area, approximately 15 minutes from TCUP.
